Photographing Your Boat

"A typical photo taken of this
boat is transformed into this
exciting painting."

The key to producing a good painting of a boat is having the right kind of reference photos. You can use any kind of camera even the disposable ones will work.

It's all about angles, what part of your boat looks best, the most pleasing view is from the stern quarter. Check out the boat ads in some magazines and try to duplicate the angles when you photograph your boat.

For sailboats it is best to have a friend on another boat take a photo while under sail. Another option is to send a brochure or magazine photo of a boat exactly like yours under sail and include photos of your actual boat taken at the dock. Using this as a reference works quite well if you try and match the two viewing angles.

Consider a painting showing your boat anchored in a remote location. You can also include a photo showing a favorite harbor, scenic anchorage or sunset which can be used in your painting.

The more you think about what you want your painting to look like, and the more photos you take of your boat, the better. Take your time and plan a few photo sessions at different times of day, for a more dramatic look try just before sunset.

After a while, there will be a couple of photos that have become your favorites. Make some extra prints for you to keep and send the prints and negatives or slides, this way we can discuss how your painting will look. All your materials will be returned with the finished painting.

Of course your painting will be exact in detail as possible, and it will look exactly like your boat. As in all fine artwork, some artistic license is always granted to the artist because a realistic work of art must look correct and also be beautiful.
